Nearly everyone will experience some form and degree of acne at some point in their lives, more than likely when they’re in their teenage years, when developing hormones cause fluctuations in skin tone and texture. Some acne is easy to conceal and treat and goes just as easily as it comes, but other types of acne are more sever and can be a real discomfort and embarrassment.
An Explanation of Cystic Acne
Cystic acne is one such form of acne, known for its soft, painful to the touch texture and large, often pus-filled cysts. When infection goes deep into the skin, the forming acne may itch and hurt, and cysts may burst which can spread and cause more breakouts.
The absolute cause of cystic acne is uncertain, though, since mostly teenager suffer from it, and teenagers experience an increase in hormones known as “androgens”, this hormone change may come into play as one of the main causes. Hormone changes brought on by polycystic ovary syndrome, pregnancy, menopause, or menstrual cycles may also result in cystic acne.
Treatments for Cystic Acne
Treating cystic acne can be done through a number of methods. A dermatologist will start by examining the skin and the severity of the cystic acne and will then proceed to prescribe one of the following:
- Oral antibiotics which can help lower the levels of bacteria and in so doing lessen any inflammation of the skin.
- Prescription strength creams, gels or lotions, often made with retinoid to help unclog pores and allow antibiotics to properly do their job.
- Isotretinoin, or “Accutane” as it was formally known, a strong medication in the form a pill taken at least once a day for about half a year. People who take this drug generally see their skin completely clearing up permanently. Women who may be pregnant or become pregnant should avoid this drug as it is known to cause birth defects.
- A medication known as “Spironolactone” is a hormone blocker which may help in clearing up the skin.
