Excessive Sweating
Approximately 8,000,000 people in the United States suffer from hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. It can affect many aspects of their lives and can have a traumatic effect on their well being and social interactions.
The most active regions of perspiration are the hands, feet, armpits, and groin because of the high concentration of sweat glands.
Hyperhidrosis is classified as either congenital or acquired depending upon the onset time. Focal hyperhidrosis starts during adolescence or earlier and is an inherited or genetic condition. Secondary hyperhidrosis can start at any point in life and can be due to disorders or conditions such as disorders of the thyroid or pituitary glands, tumors, gout, menopause or certain drugs.
Excessive sweating can either be localized to specific body parts or generalized. When it is localized, it is called primary focal hyperhidrosis. Secondary or generalized hyperhidrosis involving the whole body is generally the result of an underlying condition.
What is miraDry®?
MiraDry® procedure is a non-invasive FDA-cleared procedure that can help patients accustomed to sweating profusely. By eliminating a small number of the body’s overactive sweat glands, this treatment corrects hyperhidrosis and reduces the magnitude of sweat.
Excessive sweating can have a negative impact on our everyday lives. It can create embarrassing social situations. Often, those suffering from overactive sweat glands find themselves bathing more often, wearing clothing that covers the excessive sweating, and feeling self-conscious in many situations.
Hyperhidrosis can either be an acquired or congenital condition. Focal hyperhidrosis usually presents during adolescence and is considered a genetic or inherited condition. Secondary hyperhidrosis can start at any point and can be a result of medical conditions or disorders.
Excessive sweating can be generalized (affecting the entire body) or localized. Localized excessive sweating is called primary focal hyperhidrosis and usually affects areas such as the feet and armpits.
Procedure
The miraDry® procedure is used to treat localized hyperhidrosis in the underarm area. It is an effective procedure that is an alternative to the more invasive process of removing sweat glands.
Prior to the actual treatment, the underarm area to be treated will be numbed. The doctor will then hold a hand piece to the area, which then delivers electromagnetic energy. The heat produced by the device essentially heats and eliminates the overactive sweat glands. The entire procedure usually takes approximately one hour.
After the procedure, an immediate reduction of sweat will be experienced. There is a possibility of some soreness or swelling, which can be easily alleviated with ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers. While there is little to no downtime, it is advised that exercise be avoided for several days following the treatment.
Many people are concerned about the elimination of sweat glands. While it is true that sweat glands cool the body, the body has about four million sweat glands, with only two percent of them in the underarm region. Eliminating the glands under the arms will not affect the body’s ability to cool itself.
Treatment
Many people try other options such as antiperspirants and other treatments such as Botox®, these are only temporary procedures. Surgery for removing the sweat glands poses inherent risks. MiraDry® , on the other hand, provides great results, easily and effectively.

Profuse Sweating & The Classifications of Hyperhidrosis
Approximately 8,000,000 people in the United States suffer from profuse sweating, known as hyperhidrosis. It can affect many aspects of their lives and can have a traumatic effect on their well-being and social interactions.
Profuse sweating can either be localized to specific body parts or generalized. When it is localized, it is called primary focal hyperhidrosis. Secondary or generalized hyperhidrosis involving the whole body is generally the result of an underlying condition. For example, those suffering from profuse sweating of the armpit are said to be suffering from primary focal hyperhidrosis in the underarm region
Treatment for Localized Hyperhidrosis
When curing hyperhidrosis in the underarm region, the miraDry® procedure has proven to be quite effective. This procedure is an FDA approved non-method, removing hyperactive sweat glands from the underarm region. The miraDry® process uses microwave energy applied under local anesthesia to destroy the excessive sweating causes – overactive sweat glands.
There will be an immediate reduction of sweat after the process is completed. There may be some swelling or soreness, which is normal and is treated with an over-the-counter pain reliever and ice packs. This procedure has minimal or no downtown for the patient; however, exercise is not recommended for a few days after the procedure.
While the miraDry® procedure is only available for curing excessive sweating causes in the underarms, there are treatments available for the palms and feet. These treatments include aluminum chloride based products such as Drysol and Certain Dri; iontophoresis, and Botox® injections.
You can stop sweating while sleeping today! If you’re suffering from hyperactive sweat glands, nightsweats, excessive armpit sweat, or generalized hyperhidrosis, call The Skin & Vein Clinic today to schedule a consultation. We’ll help you cure the causes of night sweats and hyperhidrosis today!
