About Abdominal Liposuction

Liposuction is a highly popular cosmetic surgery because of its universal appeal and the directly effective results that it provides. Having a low body fat percentage is a luxury that only a few fitness phenoms in the world can enjoy. For the rest of us, excess fat cells are prone to holding strong against our best efforts to live healthily. For many people, pockets of excess fat plague the abdominal area, causing a protruding midsection that taints an otherwise fit physique. This is where abdominal liposuction with the Skin and Vein Center comes in. Dr. Seiger aims to utilize the most cutting-edge techniques that can provide the best possible results, which is why he uses SmartLipo for his abdominal liposuction procedures.

What is SmartLipo?

SmartLipo combines cosmetic laser therapy with liposuction to provide more effective results with less downtime during recovery. SmartLipo technology works by applying focused laser energy to the fat that is being targeted for removal. This melts the fat cells into a liquid state and constricts the blood vessels to reduce bleeding. Both of these effects make it easier for our surgeons to remove fat with less damage done to the surrounding tissue. The laser energy also serves to tighten the surrounding skin, as it stimulates a healing process that leads to the production of new collagen. (1)

Who is a Candidate for Abdominal Liposuction?

There are a few important considerations in determining the right candidates for abdominal liposuction surgery. These include:

  • Being close to your target body weight
  • Being in good health to avoid complications and facilitate healing
  • Having realistic expectations about what cosmetic surgery can do
  • Having enough skin elasticity to conform to a slimmer abdomen

An ideal candidate will understand that liposuction is not a weight loss solution. It is geared towards finishing the job that diet and exercise have already begun.

Personal Consultation

At your personal consultation, we will walk you through the entire abdominal liposuction treatment process. If you have any questions or concerns, we will be glad to provide all of the relevant information. We will ask you some questions about your medical history. It is important that we are aware of surgeries that you have had in the past, as well as any pre-existing conditions that may affect your treatment. We may perform some medical tests to further assess whether or not cosmetic surgery is a safe option for you. You can tell us all about the goals that you have for your body, and we can examine your abdomen to create a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve them. If we feel that you are a good candidate for abdominal liposuction at Skin and Vein Center, we can schedule your surgery and let you know what the next steps are. Preparation

We will provide instructions for how to prepare in the weeks leading up to your treatment. These instructions will include tips for preparing your body for surgery and improving your ability to heal. We may ask you to stop or start taking certain medications, depending on your current medicinal regime and the results of the tests that we run at your consultation. Before any cosmetic surgery, you should refrain from ingesting blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen. These medications reduce your blood’s ability to clot and can lead to excess bleeding during surgery. You should also refrain from smoking for four weeks prior to your treatment, as the negative health effects can lead to complications and worsen your ability to heal. (2) Continue to eat healthy and exercise regularly to maintain your weight before the surgery. This will help our surgeons determine the optimal amount of fat to remove in order to provide natural-looking results.

Abdominal Liposuction Procedure

At Skin and Vein Center, we perform abdominal liposuction on an outpatient basis. To begin your procedure, your surgeon will administer local anesthesia to prevent any potential discomfort. They will make the incisions necessary to access the abdominal fat and begin the process of preparing it for removal. The SmartLipo method will include the application of laser energy to liquify the fat and constrict your blood vessels. For a traditional liposuction procedure, this would involve manually breaking up the fat with a tube-like tool called a cannula. Regardless of the liposuction technique, your surgeon will then utilize medical suction through the cannula to remove the fat cells from your abdomen. They will create a natural abdominal contour, sculpting a flat midsection that looks fit and healthy. Finally, we will close the incisions and your procedure will be complete.

Recovery

As you begin to recover, you may feel some soreness and minimal discomfort in the treatment area. These symptoms are to be expected, and patients can typically address them with over-the-counter medications. However, if your discomfort becomes distracting, we can prescribe medication to help.

You will need to take some downtime to let your body rest and heal. Depending on the extent of your surgery, we may leave drains in your incisions or recommend the use of compression garments. We will give you detailed recovery instructions for the use of these items as well as how to take care of your incisions. Most patients can return to work one to two weeks after their surgery. We recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity for a full six weeks to ensure that your healing is complete.

Results

You will be able to see an immediate improvement in the appearance of your abdomen in the days following your surgery. However, swelling will affect these results for up to six weeks after your treatment. When the swelling has resolved, you will be able to see the full extent of your results. Your abdomen will be rid of the unsightly pockets of fat that once affected your appearance, and your physique will reflect the effort that you have put into it.

Abdominal liposuction in Michigan

The results of your abdominal liposuction will be long-lasting. Fat cells do not come back once they have been removed, so your abdomen will remain trim and slender as long as you maintain a steady weight. Fluctuations in weight can affect the aesthetic results of your treatment because the fat cells that remain in your abdomen can still shrink and grow.

FAQ

Can liposuction help me lose weight?

Although it does remove fat from the body, liposuction is not meant as a weight-loss treatment. Losing weight must be done naturally, as a result of healthy eating and consistent exercise. Liposuction works best for patients who are already at or close to their target weight and need help getting rid of the last bits of fat that affect their aesthetic appearance.

Is liposuction permanent?

Liposuction removes fat cells from the body, and once they are gone they do not come back. In this sense, liposuction is a permanent treatment. However, fat cells are abundant and ever-changing within the body, and your remaining fat cells can still be affected by your lifestyle.

What are the different kinds of liposuction?

Common liposuction techniques include traditional tumescent liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo), ultrasound-assisted liposuction (VASER), and power-assisted liposuction (PAL). Each method has its unique benefits and may be recommended based on the patient’s anatomy and desired outcomes.
