Top Laser Resurfacing Procedures and How They Can Help

Published on: November 11, 2016

As we age, there are many skin issues we face in addition to the ones we already have, such as acne scars. Our skin begins to lose its youthful glow, appearing tired and dull. In the past we would fix the problem with heavy make-up or just deal with the fact that our outside appearance would never again match the way we felt on the inside—young, vibrant, and full of life. Today, thanks to medical advances and the use of lasers, we can once again project that same youthful glow, and only those closest to us have to know we aren’t still 17.

What Is Laser Resurfacing?

CO2 laser resurfacing is the newest and safest method of removing the top layer of skin, erasing fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and reducing the appearance of acne scars, while also improving the feel and tone of the skin and forming new collagen to give the skin a tighter and plumper look. The laser uses light energy to destroy the top layers of damaged skin while “ignoring” healthy skin.

Does Laser Resurfacing Hurt?

Because a local anesthetic is used, there shouldn’t be much pain, but it is possible to feel some discomfort during the procedure, so your doctor may give you a sedative to help reduce the discomfort. After the resurfacing is complete, you may feel like you have a mild sunburn for a little while and possibly may look like you have sunburn as well; a slight pinkness or reddening of the skin can occur.

I Have Dark Skin, Am I a Candidate for Laser Resurfacing?

Unfortunately, those who have dark skin or deep wrinkles are not good candidates for this procedure. Consult with your physician to see what other options are available to you.

How Long Before I Recuperate?

Depending on the extent of your procedure, you can be healed in as little as a week or as long a couple of months.

Are There Any Risks Associated with Laser Resurfacing?

While the procedure is safer than most, there is a chance you could experience some burning, scarring, infection, or a darkening of the pigment in the area you had resurfaced.
