Staying Safe in the Summer: How to Keep your Skin Healthy

Published on: June 19, 2015

During the warmer, sunny summer months, we all want to go outside and enjoy these wonderful days. During these sun-filled days, it is especially important to make sure that your skin stays healthy and supple. We all know that the first thing we should all do is wear the proper sunscreen; however, here are some additional tips that can help keep your skin looking great!

Exfoliate for Smoother Skin

Exfoliation removes the skin’s dead debris and can help prevent the congestion of pores that can be caused from sunscreen and moisturizers. You should exfoliate your skin in the mornings before you apply moisturizers, makeup and sunscreen. After proper exfoliation, apply a moisturizer or hydrating cream, followed up by that sunscreen.

Stay Hydrated: Water is Your Friend

Higher summer temperatures can lead to dehydration with its associated possible headaches and dizziness. To prevent dehydration make sure that you drink plenty of water every day, and this means about 64 ounces of water per day.

Protect Those Lips

Often we forget about protecting our lips from the sun’s rays. Keep your lips protected with a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher, and of course, reapply often when you are outdoors.

Think About Your Scalp

Your scalp and areas around the hairline and hair part need protection too. Use a spray on SPF protection because creams may not be absorbed as well in these areas.

Where a Hat and Shades

While a baseball cap can provide some protection, a wide hat with a full brim will provide the best protection for all angles. And of course, protect those eyes with sunglass that provide a high level of UV protection.

Soothe Over-Exposed Skin

If you did forget to apply that sunscreen, or didn’t apply enough, you may suffer a sunburn; however, there are ways to alleviate the discomfort. There are many cooling gels that can reduce redness, inflammation and help prevent peeling.

Repair/Treat Sun Damage

If you have noticed brown spots, wrinkles, or damaged skin resulting from sun damage, you do have some options that can help rejuvenate your look. Your first step is to visit a physician that is knowledgeable about treating the signs of sun damage. You should also continue to follow sun protection tips to prevent further skin damage.
